FRESNO
As you know, Picture Fresno is shutting down in just a few weeks. We want to thank you all—judges, sponsors, photographers, supporters—for joining us on this year-and-a-half-long photographic journey. We know youʼll continue to celebrate Fresno with great photography after weʼre gone. But there is one last challenge for you (and a party!).
For our final challenge, weʼre going back to our roots. Grab your cameras and get out there and capture “Fresno.”
Challenge
Show us something that represents Fresno for you. Take a picture with a historical perspective, show off the Valleyʼs great food, accentuate a landmark like the Fulton Mall, or emphasize the experiences of living here. Find inspiration in our archives or create something entirely new. Youʼve only got one shot, so make it count.
Our judges will be rating your photos based on composition, storytelling, and Fresno-centrism. Remember, one submission per person. The deadline for our final challenge is Wednesday, December 14 at 8 p.m.
The judgeʼs favorite will be announced live at the Picture Fresno Holiday Extravaganza at Cafe Corazon on Thursday, December 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. And our final prize is a doozie: some of the fine establishments of Wishon Row (Twee Boutique, Frosted Cakery, and The Hashtag) have provided a bunch of goodies and weʼve got a few other tricks up our sleeve for the judgeʼs favorite (like a monthʼs worth of free guitar lessons!).
Even if you donʼt submit a photo, weʼd love for you to attend the festivities. Weʼll share refreshments, photos, and fun times, as we say Happy Holidays and goodbye to Picture Fresno.
See you at the party!
Coming Home
After a year and a half, and hundreds of awesome photos submitted, it’s time to start wrapping up our little Fresno photo experiment.
That’s right: Picture Fresno is coming to an end. We had a good run—and we can’t thank our judges, partners, sponsors, and you enough—but we’re not done yet. We’ve got two more challenges for you. So, if you’ve been waiting to join in the photo fun, now is definitely the time.
Our penultimate Picture Fresno challenge is about “Coming Home.” Anyone who says “you can’t go home again” must have a terrible sense of direction.
Challenge
You can go home again. But “home” means different things to different people. It can be your apartment, your neighborhood, or your childhood home—or it may not be a place at all. Home is, as they say, where the heart is.
Show us where your heart is. A nice family meal, a steaming cup of coffee on a cold morning, your favorite cozy chair. Where do you most feel like you? Where do you feel like you belong? With the holidays coming up, it’s a great time think about what makes you feel at home. (You’ve got until the Monday after Thanksgiving to submit your photo, so make use of those extra-homey holiday photo ops.) Whatever home means to you, take a picture of it.
And—because a healthy home is a happy home—our winner will get a $50 gift card to Lassens Natural Food & Vitamins. This new Fresno market offers fresh organic produce, free-range poultry, vitamins, natural body care products, and the best of everything good!
Be sure to check back in December for our final challenge, and info on our second and final Holiday Extravaganza!
Remember: one submission per person. The deadline for this challenge is Monday, November 28 at 8 p.m.
Culture
Some people say Fresno lacks culture, but we know better.
Challenge
Every city, every family, every person is a combination of many different cultures. We’ve got our own customs, art, symbols, and way of doing things. For the Picture Fresno “Culture” challenge, we want you to highlight one of your cultures: the people, foods, or events that represent your shared heritage.
And we’re not just talking about ethnic heritage. Your family has a culture. Your group of friends has a culture. That Star Wars obsession of yours? That’s a culture, too. Sports, food, politics—if something is important to you, it’s probably got its own culture. It’s where you come from, what you’re passionate about, and the traditions that support it.
Here are a few other cultures that may apply to you:
The first step is identify a culture that means something to you. Then, represent that culture in a creative photo. Then, submit your awesome photo (feel free to include a few words about the culture in your photo’s caption). And finally, maybe win a cheese basket from Bravo Cheese Farms.
One submission per person, please. The deadline for this challenge is Monday, November 14 at 8 p.m.Picture Yourself
For more than a year, Picture Fresno has been focusing on different aspects of our fair city, through the lens of talented photographers like you. Fresno is full of interesting places and things, but the most important part is (of course) the people. And that includes you.
Challenge
So, for our next challenge, we want you to turn the camera around, say cheese, and “Picture Yourself.”
Self-portraiture is a tradition as old as art itself. Long before pouty-faced tweens were snapping cellphone pics of themselves to post online, early humans were drawing themselves on cave walls with fire-blackened sticks. In both cases, the idea is the same: create an enduring representation of who you are, as an individual and as part of society as a whole (and also to look as cute as possible for that dreamy knuckle-dragger in homeroom).
Now it’s your time to shine. Get creative and show us who you are. Check out these helpful self-portrait tips for inspiration and guidance. Don’t worry about what a self-portrait is supposed to be; think about what it can be. (There are no strict rules, but keep in mind our judges will be looking for photos that adhere to the challenge’s description, so you should probably be in your self-portrait.) Use a tripod, use a timer, use your brain, and be yourself.
Our judge’s top pick will take home an assortment of all-natural health and beauty products from Arbonne, so you can keep yourself looking and feeling great.
One submission per person. The deadline for this challenge is Monday, October 31 at 8 p.m.
Think Pink
By now you know that photography isn’t just about what kind of camera lens you have, or what photo editing software you use, or even necessarily what you’re taking a picture of. Most of the art of photography takes place in your brain (that pink, gooey thing between your ears). It’s about being creative and seeing things a little bit differently, and sometimes it’s about just getting motivated to get up off the couch and do it.
Challenge
To be honest, we don’t really know if brains are pink (we’re not rocket scientists!), but—for the sake of photography—let’s assume they are. For our “Think Pink” challenge, we want you to use that pink thing to find some other pink things to photograph.
And there are lots of pink things. It could be food-related, like cupcake frosting or cotton candy (you might find some here). Flowers, pencil erasers, rosy cheeks, and pretty pink sunsets are good options, too.
Speaking of Pink, did you know that Daniel Pink, best-selling author and contributing editor for Wired Magazine, is delivering the keynote speech at this year’s Fresno Pacific University Business Forum? Mr. Pink writes and speaks about behavioral science, motivation, and working smarter. If you’ve been needing a push to take your photography to the next level, you may be in luck. Our winner for this challenge (and a guest) will enjoy lunch with Mr. Pink after the forum at FPU.
So pour yourself a refreshing glass of pink lemonade, then go find something that tickles you pink and snap a photo of it.
One pink submission per person. The deadline is Monday, October 17 at 8 p.m.
What Lies In The Shadows
In many ways, Picture Fresno is like a tough-as-nails private investigator exploring the city’s seedy underbelly. That’s never been more true than it is for our latest challenge, because we’re looking at “What Lies In The Shadows.” And we need you to seek out Fresno’s darkest corners: the forbidden nooks and crannies where the bright light of day fears to tread!
Challenge
Actually, our “What Lies In The Shadows” challenge isn’t all about scary darkness. Technically, it’s about both light and shadow. It’s about how they interact to turn something familiar into something entirely new (and pretty to look at).
Shadows come in many forms: lines, shapes, and silhouettes. And they’re also elusive. The shadows drawn by the sun at 8:00 a.m. may disappear within half an hour. That’s why this challenge requires a bit of extra thought on your part. Spend some time thinking about how light and shadows “move”. Pay attention to composition (remember: sometimes the most revealing part of a photo is what’s left out of the frame). Experiment with different exposure settings and contrast. And keep your eyes open and your camera nearby, because the perfect photo may wander across your lens when you least expect it.
You never know what photographic treasures you’ll capture when you look in unexpected places. Likewise, you never know what treasures you’ll find when you visit Urban Salvage, the downtown store full of cool, reclaimed trinkets and trunkets, like antiques, books, and furniture. Our winner will get a $50 Urban Salvage gift certificate (when you’re shopping, don’t forget to look in the shadows).
As always, one submission per person. The deadline for this challenge is Monday, September 19 at 2 p.m.
Foodie Favorites
It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of food (Exhibit A: Picture Fresno’s sister site TasteFresno). Living in the San Joaquin Valley, with farm-fresh produce all year round, we’ve got a lot to love. It’s time for you to unlock your inner foodie for our latest challenge.
Challenge
National blogs like FoodPornDaily.com (NSFH – Not Safe For the Hungry) and Fresno-based Pinch My Salt have elevated food photography to a mouthwatering art form. With our “Foodie Favorites” challenge, we want you to get in on the foodtography too.
We eat food every day, and it’s (hopefully) delicious and it’s (often) beautiful to look at. So let’s give our meals some well-deserved time in the spotlight. Fill up your bags at the farmer’s market (or roadside fruit stand or backyard garden), break out the recipe books (or websites), or visit your favorite local eatery. Then, before you dig in, snap some photos to show the world just how tasty Fresno can be.
You don’t have to stop at food, either. If you’re more of a drinkie than a foodie, go ahead and dazzle us with beverage photos of tantalizing iced teas, sumptuous smoothies, or colorful cocktails. Just show us something to get our taste buds tingling.
The tingliest photo will earn the judges’ favorite photographer a gift certificate from the local Frosted Cakery, known for their delicious cupcakes and other amazing single-serving baked treats.
Make us hungry! One submission per person. The deadline is Monday, September 5th at 2 p.m.
The Rhythm and the Music
Fresno’s diverse music scene continues to grow—more bands, more venues, and more concerts are popping up all over the place. So now’s a great time to get out and experience some live music, and snap some photos while you’re at it.
Challenge
For “The Rhythm and the Music,” we want you to show us your favorite live music. And, since music is usually something that’s enjoyed with your ears, it’s up to you to translate that into something we can see.
It shouldn’t be too hard to find some live music to photograph. It might be a children’s concert choir, the cover band at your favorite farmer’s market, or your neighbor’s garage band rehearsal. If you want to venture out to some bona fide concerts, we’ve got a few suggestions for that, too.
- Tuesday, August 2: Local folksters Brother Luke & The Comrades are playing Audie’s Olympic. (21+)
- Wednesday, August 3: The weekly open mic night at Iron Bird Cafe offers a chance to take pictures and step up to the mic yourself.
- Thursday, August 4: Watch some rock and roll from Fresno’s own Strange Vine at Fulton 55. (21+)
- Friday, August 4: Popular indie group Torreblanca kicks off their US tour with a FREE SHOW at Fulton 55. (21+) THAT'S RIGHT! FREE!
There are plenty of other shows before the deadline. We recommend checking the Fresno Beehive for more ideas. Once you find something that sounds good to you, grab your camera and go. Our winner will get four tickets to any upcoming show at Fresno’s coolest new venue, Fulton 55!
Remember, one submission per person. Your last chance to submit a photo is Monday, August 8 at 2 p.m.
Summer Nights
When the temperature hits triple digits, we Fresnans have a tendency to become more nocturnal—when the sun goes down, we go out. The warm summer nights offer plenty of opportunities for fun times and fancy photos. That’s why our next challenge is all about “Summer Nights.”
Challenge
When most of us think about night, we think about darkness. But it’s not totally dark—if it was, we wouldn’t be able to see anything (or take pictures of anything). After sunset, it’s just a different kind of light. Which means even familiar things can look different—people, architecture, shapes, colors. Whether you’re relaxing on a restaurant patio or scoping out your favorite Fresno landmark, nighttime is the right time for picture-taking. (Did you know the Old Fresno Water Tower is lit up at night? Amazing, but true!) The full moon is on Thursday, July 14, so there should be plenty of moonlight this week for your photographing needs.
Speaking of prizes, one of our favorite summer evening activities is the weekly Thursday night gathering on Wishon Row in the Tower District. Our “Summer Nights” winner will enjoy a $20 gift certificate for Dusty Buns Bistro Bus, along with two refreshing Cafe Corazon iced coffees. Every Thursday night, “It’s On Wishon.”
(And be sure to check out our Words section for more news, tips, and other assorted bloggings from the newest member of the Picture Fresno team, Melissa Olson.)
Don’t be afraid to experiment with your camera’s settings to see what different kinds of cool night shots you can get. But remember: you’re only allowed to submit one photo per person (so make sure it’s your best).
Deadline to submit is Monday, July 18 25 at 2 p.m.
Simple Pleasures
Hi, there. Did you miss us? Either way, we're back with a brand new Picture Fresno challenge. This time, we want you to strip away all that extra junk and get simple.
Challenge
"Simple Pleasures" is about finding joy in the little things. Around Fresno, summer is a time of friends, family, and outdoor activities (despite the heat). So, snap some photos of your favorite summertime joys, like a home cooked meal or poolside shenanigans. Or pull out your flash to capture the simple pleasure of a perfect summer evening. The deadline is July 5, so—if you're quick—you may be able to sneak in some Fourth of July fireworks pictures.
Our winner will take home a $50 gift card to Fresno Ag Hardware, along with a few tote bags to hold all that loot. Since 1876, Fresno Ag has been the best place for Fresnans to stock up for home improvement or gardening projects. In other words, it supplies the tools for you to build your own simple pleasures.
As always, photos will be judged on things like creativity, thematic relevance, Fresno-centrism, and awesomeness.
Remember: one submission per person. Deadline is Tuesday, July 5 at 2:00 p.m.
Bike Month
In case you haven’t heard, May is Bike Month. And we’ve partnered with the fine folks at I Bike Fresno for a huge bicycle-centric photostravaganza! All month long, we’ve got three bike-related challenges happening at the same time. Which means you’ve got three chances to win by submitting a photo for each of the three categories:
1. View From Your Handlebars
Fresno looks different from behind the handlebars of a bike. Show us what your handlebars see. Snap a photo with your handlebars as the picture frame, and let us see your personalized view of Fresno’s streets and bike paths. (We don’t recommend taking photos while your bike is moving. And always wear your helmet!)
2. The Path Less Traveled
Riding a bike through the city gives you a different perspective than you’d have roaring past everything in a car. You’ll encounter brand new things and see familiar places with new eyes. Take a moment to appreciate some of those places, people, and things. Then take a picture of ‘em.
3. All About Bikes
Our final challenge is a two-wheeled free-for-all. Just show us your bike. Maybe you have a super tricked-out ride or some sweet baseball cards—thp-thp-thp-thp!—in your spokes. With so many curves, lines, and shiny metals, a bike is a thing of beauty. Turn your bike into a still-life subject. Get creative, people
At the end of the month, the judges’ overall favorite will ride away with a complete I Bike Fresno prize package including a T-shirt, bike light, and water bottle. Plus, the winner will receive a complete tea set, courtesy of Little Leaf Tea (see, because biking and tea are both part of a healthy lifestyle).
Keep up with us on Facebook or Twitter – we may throw in a few extra prizes as the month progresses!
Remember: one photo per category per person. Deadline is Monday, May 30 at 2 p.m.

Mom
Let's take a moment and consider the impact of those humble characters we call "Mom." She fed you, she picked up after you, she wiped the snot from your snotty nose (and wiped other things from other places). With all she's done for you, what can you do for her?
Challenge
Take her picture, of course.
Sunday, May 8 is Mother's Day, and it's the inspiration for our latest challenge. First, pick your favorite mom. She might be your mom, your friend's mom, your husband's wife, your cousin's grandma, or your accountant's daughter. One thing is clear: a mom’s a mom, no matter what genetics are involved. Then, snap a photo of her being herself (i.e., motherly). Or, if you're feeling more abstract, use your camera to tell a story about motherhood and what it means to be a mom. Lastly, submit your photo right here.
There’s no way to objectively rate one mom compared to another (and why would you want to?), so our winner will be chosen randomly from among the entries. And, appropriately enough, we’ve got a mother of a prize. The winner will choose between two necklaces (pictured here) from Stella & Dot. We’re not gonna say you have to give it to your mom, but… we know you’ll do the right thing.
If you're still confused about what this "mother" business is, watch this. Then go take some photos.
One submission per person. Deadline is Thursday, May 5 at 5 p.m.
Victory
The thrill of competition. The agony of defeat. The sweet, sweaty smell of victory.
Challenge
The "Victory" challenge is all about winning. (Note: any photo of Charlie Sheen will be immediately disqualified.) It can be sports-related (it's a nice time of year for triple-A baseball), board game-related (Scrabble triple-word score with "jukebox"), or cooking-related (a successful triple-chocolate cake, perhaps?). Whether it's ping-pong, beer-pong, mah-jongg, third-and-long, Donkey Kong, right or wrong: if your photo shows victory, we want to see it.
You know you're all winners in our eyes, but our vision isn't so great. That's why we have judges. And that means only one of you will ultimately triumph, and walk away with our prize: a VIP roller derby package, courtesy of NOtown Roller Derby. The package includes tickets and special seating for the April 30 NOtown bout, plus free drinks and two NOtown T-shirts. If you don't understand victory by then, the derby girls will show you what it's all about.
What are you waiting for? Get winning.
One submission per person. Deadline is Monday, April 25 at 2 p.m.
In Bloom
Spring is sprung, the sun is shining, life is beautiful, yadda yadda yadda… Let's take some pictures.
Challenge
In case you haven't noticed, Fresno is "In Bloom," and so are we. It's time to unleash your inner (Fresnan) florist. It should be easy to find something suitably bloomy to point your camera at. We hear there are orchards full of fruit blossoms somewhere around here. If your own garden is looking a little lackluster, this is the perfect excuse to spruce things up. While you're at it, why not treat that special person to a bouquet of something sweet-smelling? Just make sure you get a shot of it.
And, since nothing goes better with flowers than freshly-brewed coffee, the judges' favorite photo earns lunch for two (including drinks and a delicious dessert), courtesy of Iron Bird Cafe.
Follow these links for some flower power:
- Happy (Blossom) Trails
- Other things are in bloom, too
- Watch this melodramatic video of a rose blooming
As always, points will be awarded for creativity, Fresnivity, and awesomeness. One submission per person. Deadline is Monday, April 11 at 2 p.m.
Rolling
It's been almost nine months since we started here at Picture Fresno, and we're just getting rolling. That's as good an excuse as any to make our next theme, "Rolling."
Challenge
Our theme for this challenge is "Rolling." What does that mean, you ask? Well, it could refer to the movie reels rolling at this year's Fresno Film Festival, April 1–3. Our winner gets a festival pass to all three days of films, plus the opening- and closing-night parties. Visit fresnofilmfestival.com to see the full schedule and purchase tickets (just in case).
But, come to think of it, a lot of films aren't on reels anymore. So maybe "rolling" refers to something else:
- Maybe it's about cooking.
- Or aeronautics.
- Or the under-appreciated member of a popular duo.
If you still need inspiration, head to the dictionary (dot com). One of those 70 definitions is sure to get the juices flowing. Figure out what "rolling" means for you, then take a picture of it.
For this challenge, we're back to our usual panel of esteemed judges, so keep that in mind. Points will be awarded for creative interpretations and, as always, for being Fresnocentric. Go on and get them doggies movin', rawhide.
One submission per person. Deadline is Monday, March 28 at 2 p.m.
Phoning It In
For this challenge, we want you to phone it in. Literally! By using the camera on your phone! Get it?
Challenge
Use your iPhone, Android, or other smartphone camera to capture something authentically Fresno. Then go ahead and use one of those apps like Hipstamatic or picplz to make it look all vintage and fancy. Normally we discourage heavy editing or filters on your photos, but this week we're all for it. (Think it's impossible to take cool photos with a cellphone? Think harder.)
Since you'll be making your photos look vintage, we figured the prize should be suitably vintage as well. So we're glad our friends at Spinners Records in the Tower District are offering our winner a sweet gift for all you vinyl LP lovers out there.
You be the judge
For this challenge, we're giving our tireless judges a break. That means we need you and your pals to pick the winner. Just click "like" to vote for your favorite photo below and/or "like" the photo on our Picture Fresno Facebook page. The total likes for each photo (from both places) will determine the winner.
Yes, you read that right: you (and all your friends) can vote two times for your favorite photo. And no, we don't anticipate any funny business like that other Facebook liking fiasco.
Remember, we're looking for something Fresno. One submission per person. Deadline is Monday, March 7 at 2 p.m.
Picture the Town Red
Last time, we asked you to use the color white in your shots. But when you think of Fresno, what other color springs to mind? If you said green for agriculture, you're probably right, but it's too late. We already decided on something else.
Challenge
We want to see red. Use Valentine's Day as a starting point—red hearts, red roses, red velvet, red loneliness—but don't feel restricted by the holiday. With this challenge, the sky's the limit (assuming the sky is red or on fire). Find something scarlet, crimson, cardinal, or bloody red, then build a Fresno photo around it. We're calling it "Picture the Town Red."
Our winner will receive a special "local basket" from Twin Pomegranates Wine, including wine (which is red), hand-painted glasses (by a local artist), and dried fruit (also local, obviously), along with a gift card from the Frosted Cakery.
One submission per person, please. Because we're giving away wine, this challenge is only open to those 21 or older. Deadline is Monday, February 21 at 2:00 p.m.
Red, Set, Go
Red: it's a wave.
Red: it's a Fresno chile pepper.
Red: it's a good cause.
White Out
Brrr. Fresno's winter is in full effect. The fog's on the Valley floor, snow is capping the Sierras. We're covered in white.
Challenge
Show us your foggy photos (or snowy) in our latest challenge, "White Out." Fog is perhaps the most (figuratively) atmospheric of (literal) atmospheric conditions. So it isn't surprising that our sweet (and scary) tule fog makes for some fantastic photos. Get crazy with the white open spaces. Fog, snow, polar bears, Beatles albums. Create a mood, tell a story. Wow us.
Our winner will take home a custom gift basket from Twee Boutique. If you haven't checked out this eclectic shop on Wishow Row in the Tower District, you're missing out. It's even one of Mike Oz's favorite things.
Remember: only one submission per person. (Bonus tip: some of our judges give extra points for photos showing something unique to Fresno or the Central Valley.)
You've got until Monday, February 7 at 2:00 p.m.
White On
White: it's not as simple as you think.
White: corrects your mistakes.
White: the color of fog.
Obsessions
It's 2011! Hope you had fun over the holidays. We did, but we've also been itchin' to get back to business. We're kind of obsessed with this Picture Fresno stuff.
Challenge
Speaking of segues, what are you obsessed with? That's what we want to know in our new challenge, "Obsessions." What's the stuff you can't stop thinking about? Maybe it's your papier-mâché hat collection. Maybe your mom saves all her dryer lint in a big fuzzy ball. Are you obsessed with taking pictures of sad circus clowns? Or does your obsession have to do with your New Year's resolutions—exercise, penny pinching, turtle racing, whatever? Wherever you see obsession, we want you to document it. Show us what obsession looks like to you.
Lately, here at Picture Fresno HQ, we've been pretty obsessed with kickin' butt and takin' names. So the winner of this challenge gets one month of classes at The Dungeon MMA (Kajukenbo or mixed martial arts—winner's choice!). But that's not all. Few things embody "obsession" quite like hockey fans, so we're also throwing in a 4-pack of tickets to see the Fresno Monsters. Are you starting to get that tingly, obsessed feeling yet?
You've got until Monday, January 24 at 2:00 p.m. to submit your photo.
Get Obsessed
Cawker City, Kansas is obsessed with twine.
Please keep your obsessions healthy.
What the heck is "Kajukenbo"?
That’s all, folks! (until next year)
Wow. Here we are at the end of 2010. We launched 6 months ago, but it feels like it's only been 14 weeks. Time flies when you're having fun (and also when you skip some weeks). And we've had some fun, haven't we? Who knew pictures and Fresno would go together so beautifully?
We'd be remiss if we didn't point out some of the folks who have made it so great. Our judges are the coolest around. Our sponsors are the perfect mix of generous and awesome. And, most of all, our participants are pretty darn handy with a camera (seriously, check out the archives). Thanks to all of you for being part of something cool.
If you haven't already, sign up for The Greatest Email in the World by filling in the form over on the right… OK, maybe the Picture Fresno newsletter isn't the greatest in the whole world (that title surely belongs to that one email we always get from our aunt—the one that says if we forward it to 10 friends our wish will come true!), but it's a pretty good way to know what's going on. For instance, you'll be the first to know when we've got a new challenge for you.
Until then, Happy Holidays to everyone. Be sure to rest up, because next year we'll be back with a vengeance.
See you in '11.
Week 14: Food & Family
December 10 Update
Since we're extending the deadline for this challenge and calling it the last of the year (see below), we've invited The Laundry Room's owners, brothers, and style aficionados Joey and Jonah Pauline to guest judge your submissions for "Food & Family!" (You met them Tuesday at the Holiday Extravaganza.)
Think about all the good times in 2010 you've had with family (or those who feel like family) - most likely food has been involved with those happy moments! Family vacations, birthdays, weddings, spontaneous late-night food runs, brunch with your grandparents (or dinner at 3:00 p.m.), and so many other memories from this year were worth capturing on camera. Show us!
If your photo is selected as the judge's favorite, you will receive $100 to Trelio Restaurant. If our guest judges choose your photo as their favorite, they'll help you add to your style repertoire with $75 to The Laundry Room. Both prizes would make great stocking stuffers (for yourself!).
What are you waiting for??? Submit your 2010 "Food and Family" memorable moment today! The final deadline is Wednesday, December 15.
Original Details
We love food. It's really the best thing ever. And we guess family is OK sometimes, too. This week's challenge is "Food & Family." And it's just in time for a certain family- and turkey-centric holiday. Be sure you've got your camera by your side over this long weekend, and get ready to show us the flavor of your family.
Challenge
Food and family go together like stuffing and cranberry sauce. We want to see how your food and your family go together. What are your traditions? How do you break tradition? Does your family celebrate in a totally unique way? What do you do with the leftovers?Get creative and tell your story. We're sure you'll have plenty of opportunity, from the ceremonial pre-dinner preemptive antacid to the inevitable day-after leftovers sandwich.
Make us smile. Make us hungry. Make us thankful.
You'll probably be pretty tired after spending hours cooking in the kitchen, watching hours of football on TV, and taking hours of Picture Fresno pictures. You'll definitely want to take a break from the cooking and the hustle and bustle. This week's winner will enjoy a well-deserved dinner with their $100 gift card to Trelio Restaurant. Yum!

The deadline to submit photos is Monday, December 6 at 2:00 p.m. UPDATE: The deadline has been extended to Wednesday, December 15 at 2:00 p.m. This will be our last challenge for 2010! You're only allowed to submit one photo per person, so make it count. The winner will be announced at our first-ever Picture Fresno Holiday Extravaganza the following night!
Week 13: Fall Colors
Fans of black and white photography may want to skip this challenge—or, y’know, just shoot in color for once—because this week it’s all about color. “Fall Colors,” specifically. Some people call it “fall,” others call it “autumn,” and still others call it “pumpkin time.” Whatever you call it, we’re talking about the fun, warm colors that start showing up everywhere when the weather starts getting cold.
Challenge
There are certainly lots of fall colors in the trees and the leaves on the ground, but don’t stop there. This town is full of oranges, browns, ambers, aubergines (is that a color?), golds, and olive greens. You might find them in food or decorations. They might be in the sky or stuck to the bottom of your shoe. Who knows? Just get out there and find your favorite fall colors, wherever they are. Then, start snappin’. Upload, judging, et cetera, you know the drill.
The winner will receive their very own pie kit, courtesy of Whole Foods Market. It includes everything you need to bake a delicious and nutritious pie, plus it comes with an inspirational pumpkin candle and delicious hot cocoa to sip on while your delicious pie is baking. Delicious!
Don’t be a turkey. Go find some color! Your deadline is Monday, November 22 at 2:00 p.m.

Week 12: A Breath of Fresh Air
Here at Picture Fresno, we're big fans of breathing. And do you know what one of our top three favorite things to breathe is? Air. So it makes sense that this week we're partnering with the Valley Air District for a challenge we're calling, "A Breath of Fresh Air."
Challenge
There are tons of ways we can live a little greener and make the air a little cleaner. Do you use public transportation or bike to work? Maybe when you're walking to the store (to save gas) you catch a clear view of the mountains. Or perhaps you're really proud of your cool new electric lawnmower. These are all great opportunities to snap a photo that illustrates how and why you give a darn about breathing in Fresno.
The challenge closes at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 15. Our esteemed panel of judges will then pick their favorite submitted photo based on criteria like creativity, courage, and airiness (note: these may not be actual judging criteria).
Of course, we'll have some fancy prizes for the winner. First of all, you'll get a shiny iPod shuffle (1GB, previous generation). That's cool enough on its own, but you'll also get a bunch of sweet gear for your bike—safety lights, a mini-pump, and a fold-out toolkit—plus big bag o' clean air swag!
So get clicking!

Week 11: Rusty Old Things
We know what you're thinking: "Halloween's next week, so Picture Fresno should do a costumed-related theme!" Don't worry, it's coming. But the Halloween parties don't start for a few more days, and most won't take place until next weekend.
Besides, if you're like us, you don't have a costume...yet. You know who's got you covered? The folks over at Yoshi NOW! And they're giving a $50 gift card to the store to this week's challenge winner1.
If you haven't been to Yoshi before, the store is full of vintage clothes, furniture and memorabilia. In fact, the "new" couch at Picture Fresno HQ (also known as Paprika Studios) is a recent Yoshi find.
The Challenge
Inspired by the history and story of the items at Yoshi, this week's challenge is to photograph something weathered and old—specifically, something rusty. A car, a chair, an old piece of equipment, even a piece of art—if it's old, and rusty, share it!
You have until Monday, November 1 to submit.
Get Inspired
- » Telling story: Sal Hernandez
- » Find Yoshi on Facebook
- » Learn more about rust (and see examples of "rusty" photos)
- » Visit George's Museum of Rust (this is just random)

1 You don't have to shop for a Halloween costume; gift card is not valid toward the purchase of consignment items.
Week 10: Shoes
You know that guy in those cell phone commercials? No, not that guy—the one that gives away all the shoes! His name is Blake Mycoskie, and he's coming to Fresno on October 27 to speak at Fresno Pacific University's 2010 Business Forum.
To the Point – the Goods
This week's challenge offers two ways to win (and…*swoon*…hear from Blake):
1. Judges' Favorite
As with previous challenges, our judges will rate all photos submitted on relevance, creativity and aesthetic quality. The judges' pick will receive two (2) tickets to the Business Forum breakfast (worth $40 each).
2. FPU Favorite
The team organizing this year's Business Forum will also pick a favorite photo—if it's yours, you'll receive a pair of TOMS shoes AND a ticket to an exclusive luncheon with Blake.
Both events take place on Wednesday, October 27.
The Challenge
Shoes. Casual, formal, flip flopped, laced, open-toed—submit photos that feature shoes. Tip: Compose the images to tell an interesting story about the wearer.
Important: For this challenge, only one entry will be accepted from each participant.

Week 9: Fulton Mall
Welcome back, friends! Let's skip the part where we talk about where we've been the last couple of weeks (mostly here, if you're curious). On to the good stuff.
Rethinking the Urban Core
On Saturday, the City of Fresno concluded a series of design charettes focused on downtown—the Fulton corridor took center stage, as consultants gave presentations and community members gave input on eight design alternatives. While it's fun (and quite easy) to get caught up in drawings and ideas, the Fulton Mall is already an interesting place. That's what we think, anyway.
So that's your challenge this week: Fulton Mall.
The people, the buildings, the art—anything in, on or around the Fulton Mall is fair game. Think that this part of our community should be preserved? Show us why! Think it's time for change (say, maybe a road)? A picture's worth 1,000...well, you know the saying.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- As usual, the photos need to be yours
- While photo descriptions aren't normally required, we're asking that you share the date the photo was taken, along with where you were on the Mall (in case it's not obvious)
- You have a week to take and post your photos—we'll close the challenge on Sunday, October 10 at 10:00 p.m.
The Bounty: Come and Get It!
Chicken + waffles = yum. But don't take our word—if you're this week's pick from the judges, you can decided for yourself, with a family meal from Come and Get It Chicken and Waffles (on the north end of the mall). Bring your friends, though. It's a lot of food!

Week 8.5: Disney
If you've been following Picture Fresno themes, and following the calendar, you may have noticed that our weeks don't exactly align. We're going to throw things further off course this week with something special.
See, we have four tickets to give away for Disney Live! Mickey's Magic Show, coming to Saroyan Theatre this Sunday, September 19 (at 3:00 p.m.). That's like...this weekend. See here for more about the show.
The theme for this challenge is Disney. Here are the rules:
- Photos must be submitted by Friday, September 17, at 2:00 p.m.
- We're giving the judges the week off, so we'll pull a random photo Friday afternoon to select the winner
- While we'll be talking about pictures of Fresno more next week, we want to see photos of you at Disney, or wearing something Disney-themed
- Note that above it says photos of you—we know you have them
- These can include a self-captured smile with a loved one, or a staged shot with Mickey/Donald/Belle taken by someone else, as long as you have permission to share it (as in, it was taken with your camera, or given to you to use as you wish)
- You can upload more than one photo, but only one will count when it comes to the random drawing (and at least one has to show you)
Special thanks to the Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center for the tickets!
Week 8: Lines
National Parks, Farm Fresh, Staycation—those are pretty specific themes. So this week, we're opening things up for broader interpretation.
The theme?
Lines. Lines of people. Lines of color. Lines of buildings. Lines of farm land. Lines of fabric. Lines.
(Sidenote: When you write out "lines" seven times in a row, the word starts to look funny.)
Oh, and we're giving this an extra week, so you have until Sunday, September 5 at 10:00 p.m. to submit—that's a holiday weekend, so try to relax a little, too. We're encouraging you to get out and look for new inspiration—if you need ideas, start with a walk downtown.
Ready? Upload away!

Week 7: Staycation
Week 7? 7?!?
Woah. Maybe it's time for a break.
We really could use a mini-vacation. Then again, we don't have a travel budget, so better make it a staycation. (That seems to be a growing trend—vacationing without travel.)
Sure, we have some pretty cool sites nearby, and we like to brag about Fresno's proximity to bigger cities, the beach, etc., but there's a lot to take in right here.
So, before summer is completely over, show us how you're staycationing. Or how you've staycationed. Or how you plan to staycation (we don't know how you'd do this, but we welcome the creativity).
Links and stuff
Week 6: Sounds of the City
Last week, Kara Lee came to us (the elves behind Picture Fresno), wanting to know how she could gain access to the inner circle of Creative Fresno. "Wouldn't it be great if I could attend one of their events—to see what it's like? I hear Pecha Kucha is cool," she urged.1
We told Kara Lee that she'd have to submit a photo for Chit Chat, and find favor with the judges. And she did.
Congrats, Kara Lee! (Here's her photo, in slow-motion action replay.)
Enough chit chat
Okay, it's time to make some noise. Actually, it's time to take pictures, and instead of noise, let's focus on sound. As in, Sounds of the City.
Not sure what that looks like? You're in luck: judge and photographer Ryan Jones offers some ideas and helpful tips. Music, crowds, traffic—think both inside and outside the box!
Cool stuff that's related:
- What's in it for you (like Mayer Hawthorne tickets, or access to the August 28 No Town bout)
- Exploring sound with Ryan C. Jones

Week 5: Chit Chat
UPDATE:
Okay, so maybe you're already a member of Creative Fresno. Time to sweeten the pot; how about two tickets to Monday's event? If you're 21 or older, we'll throw in two drink tickets, too. (Obviously, this means we'll have to announce the winner on Monday!)
Orginal Post:
Ask us to define Fresno "culture," and we'd have to include in our description an obsession with the Japanese language, and a passion for giving presentations in a dimly-lit room. Case in point: PechaKucha Night, which returns next Monday to Starline for it's eighth installment.
See, "pecha kucha" is a Japanese term for "the sound of conversation"—it's chit chat. We're fans of the event, which allows creatives to show off their works and passions, so it's our inspiration for the new theme.
We know that the last two weeks have been exhausting, what with all the hiking and exploring national parks. So now it's time to relax a little—to sit down with cup of coffee, or a cold beer, or a glass of kombucha. To enjoy the company of friends and family, or strangers, if you're outgoing like that. To make sounds of conversation (it seemed too repetitive to say "chit chat" again).
As always, the theme is open to interpretation.

Week 4: National Parks
Ask five Fresnans to list our community's greatest assets, and at least six will mention access to nearby national parks.
In case you only travel west of Highway 99, there are three parks within immediate reach: Kings Canyon, Sequoia and Yosemite (which is so popular that we named our airport after it!). Each is magnificent and stunning in its own ways, so your challenge this week is to show that in photo-form. Consider it an excuse to escape the heat, and take a day trip to Yosemite's valley floor, or to General Sherman—better yet, get off the beaten path and explore someplace new.
We know, all that driving and hiking can be exhausting, so the judges' favorite this week gets to relax on the next visit to Yosemite, courtesy of Tour Yosemite and Beyond (details below). And since you have already set your weekend plans, we're giving you an extra week to submit your photo. We've also outlined a few tips for shooting the parks from local photographer and judge Paul Mullins (one look at Paul's portfolio will show he knows what he's talking about).
Of course, you can always use photos taken on previous trips, and shots of people and animals (in a national park) are welcome. We'll even take photos from other parks... Just remember to submit by 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 1!
Photo tips from Paul Mullins
Paul's award-winning work in landscape photography has been featured in several publications and showcased worldwide. For examples, visit his landscape gallery.
The three C's of creative images are Communication, Composition and Craftsmanship:
Communication: When you are making images, what are they saying? Does it relate to the theme? Is there a focus within the picture? How is it meaningful to you? What is expressed in the photo that you are passionate about? Why did you make that image?
Composition: Composition is what makes a photo look good. Find contrasting colors within the image; it conjures up emotion. There should always be a dark, light, and middletone value - one should be dominant. The one that's shown the least should be the subject of the image. Think old and new, rough and smooth, or in terms of complementary colors like orange and blue. With contrast, there's always a hero and a villain. Those are the types of things that create emotion.
Craftsmanship: Play around with your camera. Experiment with the tools you have. Always ask, "What would happen if I tried this?" Don't always shoot on automatic. Craftsmanship is about technical focus like exposure and lighting. When you are shooting landscape photography, don't always put the sun behind you—it can look flat. Try lighting the subject with the sun from the side or 3/4 back.
The image shown here highlights the subject of the fallen tree. Notice the orange and blue contrasts. See how the image utilizes the rule of thirds. Place your subject in one of the intersecting quadrants.
Prize Details
Tour Yosemite and Beyond is giving two tickets to a Yosemite Tour (valued at $105 each) to this week's pick. Read more about the tours for all the picture-perfect details.Week 3: Farm Fresh
The heat of summer may force us inside most of the day, but in those short commutes to and from work, or school, or wherever, look around. Stuff grows here.
All around us, fresh fruits and veggies are sprouting. We think that's kind of cool, so the theme for week two is Farm fresh. That's open to interpretation (as in, a garden is kind of like a mini farm, right?), but we're looking for photos that show off the Valley's freshness. If you're in need of inspiration, head out to a farmer's market. Pronto.
Of course, what better way to celebrate freshness than with something fresh. Thanks to Fruta del Sol, the judges' favorite this week receives four 10-pound deliveries of fresh, certified organic peaches, nectarines and plums. Now that's something to celebrate!
Week 2: Celebration
It's summer. Sure, it's hot, but that's only from 6:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. The evenings are still fairly mild, and the air is surprisingly clear, and that's reason to celebrate. (Did you pick up on that hint last week?)
So light a candle for someone's birthday. Turn on the sprinklers (on your City-approved watering day) and let the kids run wild. Celebrate something, and take a picture. Then upload it here, and tell us what you're celebrating. Better yet—share one of those photos you were taking of fireworks on Sunday. (We don't care when you take/took the photo, as long as you took it, and it tells the story of a celebration.)
Since this is our first challenge, it may be helpful to read how it works, but we've tried to keep things simple. We can't promise that your photo will make you famous, but it will make you eligible for two awesome prizes: a four-pack of tickets to the Grizzlies game of your choice, and $50 to Yosemite Ranch. We can feel your excitement, but settle down...you have until Sunday at 10:00 p.m. to post a photo, and then the decision rests in the hands of our judges.
Speaking of the Grizzlies, did you know they're ranked #1? Now that's something to celebrate!
Week 1: (Historical) Perspective
For the last couple of weeks, we (Alisa and James), have been hinting at the launch of a site for Fresno-focused photo contests. Well, there's no contest yet, but that's what Picture Fresno will do. Eventually...
Here's the idea: many of us take pictures of our daily lives—of the food we eat, or the events we attend, or the (fill in the blank). Those pictures tell a story. And if we put all of those pictures into a timeline, we tell the story of our community. To encourage people to share, we thought we'd give away some cool stuff.
That starts next week—on Tuesday, we'll post the first challenge. (Here's a hint: Fourth of July is a of independence.) But before we get caught up in the now, we're taking a few days to reflect on the then, and posting photos that have been archived by the Fresno Historical Society. Check them out, because they're awesome.
