chinese families celebrate the arrival of a new baby with a red egg & ginger party, the purpose of which is to introduce the new baby to the entire extended family. at this party, red eggs and ginger are offered to all the guests to symbolize good luck and a long life. a whole roast pig with its head on is also customary at such a feast -- because chinese love their roast pork!

this photo is from our daughter jada's red egg party, held at the central california chinese cultural center in visalia when she was 3 months old. both sets of grandparents were there, as were 150+ of our family and friends, to meet little jada.

perhaps jada felt sorry for the pig when this shot was taken.
